GAUTENG – Lerato Patricia Mufamadi (42) formerly employed by MMG South Africa (Pty) Ltd as an executive administrator was sentenced to 291 years’ imprisonment for fraud by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 May 2024.
Mufamadi performed duties such as receiving petty cash, reconciliation and processing of the company’s invoices. Instead of paying suppliers, she then fraudulently processed invoices of suppliers for payments but Mufamadi transferred funds into her personal bank account and also an unknown FNB bank account. The company discovered the fraudulent transactions and the matter was reported at Rosebank police station in February 2022. The case was transferred to the Johannesburg based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team resulting in her arrest on 04 April 2023.
MMG South Africa Management (Pty) Ltd suffered a loss of R15 Million due to her fraudulent activities. Mufamadi pleaded guilty and was convicted on multiple counts of fraud. The court has imposed a cumulatively sentence of 291 years’ to Mufamadi. Fifteen years’ for each of the 13 counts and eight years’ for each of the remaining 12 counts. Mufamadi is to serve an effective 18 years’ jail term after the sentence was ordered to run concurrently.
The Provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng Major General Ebrahim Kadwa has commended the investigators and the prosecution teams for the record breaking conviction and sentencing.
