Banks advise customers of phishing scam

Two local banks have issued a warning about a potential scam circulating in the area.

Western Heritage Credit Union and Platte Valley Banks have issued an alert that customers have received automated phone calls and callers are told that their ATM or debit cards have been compromised or deactivated. In the calls, customers are asked to give all their card information for “verification.” It then prompts the customer to enter their full card number, PIN number, and then either a checking or savings account number. The system in no way identifies with a certain bank, just says the customer’s card has been deactivated.

The two banks said in alerts that customers in Bridgeport and Alliance have been contacted. Banking customers are being reminded that their personal banks will not try to collect their information via phone, text or email. The phishing scam operates by calling random numbers in the area and scammers are able to access accounts when customers respond.

If someone replied to the call, and gave their personal information, they need to call VISA Check and Cash Card Services immediately at 800-264-5578 to cancel their card. Then they need to contact their local bank, Platte Valley Bank officials said in a press release. Western Heritage Credit Union customers should also contact their bank.
