HARTFORD (CBS Connecticut) — Hundreds of bank customers in Connecticut and western Massachusetts have been receiving phone calls in what’s known as a “phishing” scheme.
Simsbury bank president and CEO Martin Geitz says the calls are fake, an effort to get account information. The recipient is told his or her debit card has been frozen, and should enter the account number to “reactivate” it.
Geitz says the bank would never request information in that way. He says it’s simply a scheme to get account information in order to drain the balance, and says anyone receiving such a call should hang up and inform the bank.
Police say anyone who may followed the fraudulent instructions should call the bank and get a new card.
