I recently received an email with this subject line: You’ve Been Rewarded. and I am concerned that it could be an attempt at defrauding me. Let me know in the comments section what you think, please.

Installing the Striata Reader
Step 1: Connect to the Internet.
Step 2: Download the Reader from the Striata Website (58Kb): Go to www.striata.co.za/index-africa.php and click on “Download Striata Reader” image.
Step 3: Select “Open/Run”. If no ‘open/run’ option given, select ‘Save’ and then ‘Open’.
Step 4: The Reader is now installed. Select “OK” to close the ‘install confirmation’ dialogue box.
Testing the installation
Step 5: Double-click on the digitally signed attachment. You will be prompted to type in a password. (Password for the welcome mail is “test”)
Installing Adobe Reader
To open your statement, you need to have Adobe Reader v 5.0 or higher. If you do not have Adobe Reader, go to www.adobe.com/uk/products/ to download the latest version
User Guidelines
Electronic statement delivery allows statement receiving/retrieval and the service incurs no additional charges.
Customers who use the electronic statement facility and who wish to change an email address or revert back to printed statements can inform Absa by contacting an Absa branch or changing the setting directly on Internet Banking.
Statements will be available in either English or Afrikaans depending on your language preference chosen.
Absa will only send statements to the email addresses specified by the customer.
It is your sole responsibility to ensure that no unauthorized person and/or third party have access to your email or your password. In the event that an unauthorized person and/or third party gains access to your email or your password, Absa shall under no circumstances whatsoever, be held liable for any loss or damage suffered as a result of your confidential information being disclosed.

How do I know that this is a phishing attempt? I don’t bank at Absa. If I did I would have been sorely tempted to open the attached. Lucky I didn’t.
