A thief worked fast this week to use credit cards found in a wallet, ringing up more than $1,800 in purchases before the victim found out and canceled the cards, police reported.
According to the Madison Police Department, the theft of the 27-year-old woman’s wallet happened Monday afternoon at Copps Food Center, 2502 Shopko Drive, but she didn’t realize her wallet was missing until she got a “fraud alert” email from a credit card company Tuesday morning.
“The wallet was inside her purse in a shopping cart,” said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain in a news release. “She believes someone lifted the wallet when she was not looking.”
Once the victim got the fraud email, police said, she quickly canceled her credit cards.
“But the criminal had enough time to ring up more than $1,800 worth of purchases at various locations,” DeSpain said.
