The Vermont attorney general is warning the public to beware of a scam intended to target Merchants Bank customers.
The scam, delivered by both telephone calls and text messages, tell recipients that their bank accounts have been compromised and they direct bank customers to call another number to “confirm” their accounts by giving account numbers and other identifying information.
The scam, known as a “phishing” scam, is designed to gather confidential bank and identity information that would allow the scammers to gain access to a person’s bank account.
While not a new type of scam, the number of phony calls and texts sent to Vermont residents has increased recently, according to the Attorney General’s office.
Anyone who receives a phone call or text message seeking bank account information can cal the Consumer Assistance Program at 1-800-649-2424 or send email at consumer@uvm.edu.
