VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) –
Police said dozens of people had their mail stolen, and it was all found in a Vancouver home.
Officers were called to a home on the 6100 block of Northwest Cherry Street Saturday. The homeowner discovered large amounts of mail in a bedroom that a relative who had been a houseguest was using.
The mail belonged to upward of 40 different people. None of them were associated with the home or the houseguest.
The mail included credit cards, checks and other financial information.
Many of the victims appear to be concentrated in the neighborhood where the mail was located, police said. However, due to the large number of items recovered, investigators believe there may be victims outside of that area as well.
The suspect has been identified, but police have not released the person’s name or made an arrest yet. The case is also being referred to the U.S. Postal Inspector.
Vancouver police are in the process of contacting the victims.
Anyone who believes they may be the victim of mail theft or identity theft should make a police report, contact their financial institution or credit card company, have a fraud alert placed on their accounts and contact all three credit bureaus to run a credit report.
