Dear Friend,
I am Mr. Richard Wahl, the mega winner of $533M USD in Mega Millions Jackpot, I’m donating to 5 random individuals. If you receive my email, then your email was selected after a spin ball. I have spread most of my wealth over a number of charities and organizations. I have voluntarily decided to donate the sum of $10M USD to you as you are one of the selected 5, to verify my winnings please see the YouTube page below.

The above is a well-known lottery donation email scam.
While Richard Wahl is a real person who won the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot in New Jersey in 2018, scammers have been using his real name, real news clips, and YouTube links to target victims ever since.
HOW THE SCAM WORKS
- The Hook: You receive an email claiming your address was “selected after a spin ball” or picked randomly to receive a multi-million dollar donation.
- The Lure: They include real links to news coverage of his win to make the message seem legitimate.
- The Hook Up / Trap (Advance Fee Fraud): Once you reply, the “personal assistant” or “financial team” will request your full personal details (full name, phone number, address) and ask you to pay a small “processing fee,” “transfer fee,” or “clearance tax” before they can send the check or ATM card.
- The Result: Once you send money or hand over personal details, the scammer vanishes, leaving you out of pocket or at risk of identity theft.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
- Do not reply or send any personal or financial details.
- Do not click any links or open any attachments.
- Mark as Phishing/Spam in your email client and delete it.
No lottery winner sends millions of dollars to random strangers via unsolicited emails.
