With many people having gotten paid before the long weekend, East Coasters are probably still busy paying their accounts, some via the Internet.
If you get an email asking you to click on a link to verify your online banking account details, delete it. Fraudsters try and scare people into accessing these links and providing information which is then used to hack into accounts. If you’re unsure, go into your bank. However, due to online fraud, banks do not ask for verification of personal information by clicking on any email links.
Lottery SMS alert:
Have you received an SMS saying you’ve won a lottery that you never entered? Crimewatch has received several emails from listeners with the very same story. They received text messages saying they’d won in the Nokia lottery. They called the numbers provided and were told to buy Vodacom airtime and then SMS the voucher pin numbers to the lottery operator. Both asked the so-called operator for land lines and of course there weren’t any. The thing about this scam is that the con artists are smooth operators so if their target is unsuspecting, they can easily be swayed.
Car Stolen:
And, a car was stolen yesterday in the Chatsworth/Mariannhill area at around 11h30. It is a Toyota Corolla 2008 with the registration, NX 10955. The owner is offering a R10 000 reward for information that will help lead to the car being recovered. You can contact the owner on 079 775 4610.
