BAYARD — Chimney Rock Public Power District and electric utilities across the United States are reporting a new phishing scam targeting their customers.
The customers are receiving calls after normal office hours from an individual identifying themselves as an employee of the utility. The caller will tell the customer that their service will be disconnected unless payment is received immediately and the caller will try to collect payment via credit card.
In other cases, the caller tells the customer that they may have a broken meter that is dangerous and in need of replacing for a fee.
Chimney Rock does not call and threaten to disconnect at night or weekends if payment isn’t made immediately. In the case of meters, if there is a possibility of having a broken or damaged meter, contact Chimney Rock’s office. Any possible fees related to meter damage would be assessed by Chimney Rock.
Chimney Rock Public Power District urges its customers to be on guard to this scam and report any suspicious calls to 308-586-1824.
