FREE STATE – Members of the Hawks attached to Bethlehem Serious Commercial Crime Investigation have on Monday, 20 May 2024, served court summons on a 50-year-old Clocolan man. The suspect will make his first appearance in the Clocolan Magistrates’ Court on 11 June 2024 facing charges of fraud and contravention of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005.
It is alleged that the suspect took a R800 000 loan from a Ladybrand agricultural business, OVK. The loan was approved on condition that he had put two of his vehicles as sureties should he fail to settle the loan. When the suspect could not make further monthly payments as agreed, OVK pursued him with the intention to recover and sell the two vehicles. However, they discovered that the suspect had sold both vehicles. It was this misrepresentation that led to OVK opening a case against him.
The matter was initially withdrawn but later placed back on the roll to be heard in the criminal court. On 20 May 2024, the suspect was served with summons to appear in court.
