A new phishing scam is targeting Netflix subscribers where users are led via email to a phony website that resembles the online streaming service, the Better Business Bureau said in a release.
Users who land on the fake website enter their login information, but are told their account is suspended. They are then directed to call a fake customer service number in India, the release said.
Callers are then instructed to download “Netflix support software” by the fake representative, which gives them complete access to the user’s computer, the release said.
“Netflix has a good reputation and scammers are taking full advantage of that,” said Steve J. Bernas of the BBB. “Anyone could fall for this scam.”
The BBB gave three indicators for consumers to look out for:
– Make sure the phone number belongs to Netflix and not a call center in India.
– The phony website is similar to a popup ad.
– The fake representative wants to login to your computer via remote software.
The release said users should never let someone login to their computer remotely and to search for websites by entering the URL manually. If the URL seems odd, do not continue to the site, the release added. Finally, users should always lookup phone number’s related to a company asking for information.
