Wombat Security Technologies has been given a $750,000 Defense Department grant for its anti-phishing filtering technology.
The Pittsburgh-based security technology company said its PhishPatrol will be used to protect against smartphone and social-network based phishing attacks. Wombat said its product can catch what other competitors can’t.
“Under this contract, we will be able to further enhance our unique anti-phishing filter technologies and tailor them for new attack channels such as short messages and social networks, which are quickly becoming the new frontier for phishing attacks,” said Wombat Chief Scientist and co-founder Norman Sadeh in a prepared statement.
Wombat has 21 employees and was spun out of work from Carnegie Mellon University. It had $469,742 in government contracts in 2011, according to a recent story in the Pittsburgh Business Times.
