Gov. Tim Walz says he has a plan to “transform” the largest state agency and combat fraud.
The plan would be a major structural overhaul for the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), which has been riddled with fraud allegations impacting numerous programs it administers. The department employs over 7,000 people and manages billions of dollars each year.
The governor’s office says his proposal would streamline the delivery of human services, modernize Medicaid administration, consolidate some administrative functions, and initiate independent reviews to combat fraud.
Walz referred to the current organizational structure as “a bit of a Frankenstein monster,” very complex and difficult to manage.
