MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – UCare, once the state’s largest Medicaid insurer, repeatedly approved the same billing practices that resulted in massive criminal investigations into Medicaid fraud, according to court records and evidence reviewed by the FOX 9 Investigators.
‘UCare paid every claim’
What we know:
John Hamer is a criminal defense attorney representing several defendants currently charged with Medicaid fraud. “UCare paid every claim,” Hamer argued in a court filing this summer.
He claims UCare investigated the suspected fraud involving his clients but continued to approve payments for another 16 months before alerting criminal investigators.
Hamer cited internal records he claims show UCare continued to authorize payments even after its own investigator reported that “intent to fraud is evident.”
