LIMPOPO – Thirteen suspects, including a company director, are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court following their arrest by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team during an operation code named JOHN VUL’GATE.
The suspects face allegations of fraud, theft and money laundering relating to an amount of R732 549-15 allegedly obtained through fraudulent Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claims processed through the Department of Employment and Labour in Burgersfort.
The matter was reported to the Hawks by the Department of Employment and Labour in Limpopo after irregularities were detected in the processing of UIF claims.
It is alleged that certain individuals were recruited to submit UIF claims on the basis that they had previously been employed and retrenched by various companies. During the verification process, the companies allegedly indicated that they had no employment records corresponding with the claims in question.
The subsequent investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team uncovered alleged fraudulent transactions and financial activities suspected to be linked to the proceeds of the UIF claims. The investigation also identified alleged money-laundering activities involving the main suspect.
Following consultation with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), warrants of arrest were issued in respect of the identified suspects.
The operation commenced on 22 September 2026, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals and the apprehension of one individual linked to a juristic entity, on 23 September 2026. The relevant juristic entity has also been implicated in the investigation.
The suspects are expected to make their first appearance in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 25 September 2026. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
The Provincial Head of the DPCI in Limpopo, Major General Adv Gops Govender, commended the investigating team for the breakthrough.
He said our responsibility is to protect public resources and ensure that funds intended for legitimate beneficiaries are not diverted through fraudulent activities. We will continue to pursue those suspected of abusing public funds and ensure that matters are properly investigated and placed before the courts.
