The Better Business Bureau is sharing information on a recent scam that installs a virus on victims’ computers. Emily Patterson, who blogs for the BBB about consumer alerts and scams, shares a scenario where scammers try to access a person’s computer by pretending to help and then surreptitiously install damaging virus software.
Victims will get a call from someone who claims to be with a well-known software company, such as Microsoft. The caller will have the victim’s name and other personal information that may be available in public phone directories. The caller may even guess which computer system the victim is using.
