SAINT PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) – Minnesota’s fraud concerns may stem from decades of policy decisions, at least according to a new report.
Tim O’Malley, who was appointed last year by Gov. Tim Walz to analyze statewide fraud prevention and oversight, released a “roadmap” for preventing fraud on Monday.
The 56-page report includes nearly 70 examples of past warnings that date back to 1977.
“Fraud prevention warnings date back a half-century,” the report noted. “Preventative actions should have been taken long ago. Today, criminals are exploiting decades-old inadequate internal controls.”
Examples noted in report
The majority of the examples included in O’Malley’s report are from the state’s Department of Human Services (DHS), with 31 separate notations and date references.
Terminology included within these examples are the phrases “serious deficiencies” and “did not comply with.”
