YORK – A York woman hopes sharing her experience will help her friends and neighbors avoid similar unpleasantness.
Janice Taylor called the News-Times office after she’d been scammed in a crooked computer repair scheme.
By then Taylor had spoken with the Nebraska Attorney General’s office about what happened to her. A follow-up message left with the AG’s fraud division by the News-Times seeking more details and consumer advice on this particular scam has gone unanswered for several days.
Taylor said the number 866-306-5726 appeared on her caller ID. What followed was a claim – bogus as it turned out – that “something was wrong” with her computer.
Since that call it’s “really been a struggle,” she said.
Taylor said she called the 866 number “over and over” trying to get to the bottom of it after she realized things were not as they should be. “One time it did answer, but there was no one there,” she reported.
She was told her “computer was in jeopardy” and that “it’s going to crash. They even took over my mouse,” she said.
Since then she’s been in touch with her credit card service, which has blocked further billings.
The AG, she said, confirmed to her that the 866 number is indeed tied to a scam. Taylor also learned that her call originated in India.
