POLOKWANE – A 54-year-old Police Sergeant based at Lebowakgomo was arrested on Wednesday, 22 July 2026 by members of the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for alleged fraud and theft.
It is alleged that on Friday, 11 April 2025, a male complainant was driving a State vehicle in the Sebayeng policing area during the Arrive Alive campaign and stopped at a local filling station to refuel.
When he swiped the state fleet card, the transaction was declined due to insufficient kilometers having been travelled since the last refuel.
Further preliminary investigations revealed that the fleet card had been used on the same day without the correct kilometers being captured. An amount of R1,227.50 was transacted.
Intensive investigations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Unit further revealed that the same member allegedly used another state fleet card at a filling station under Lebowakgomo policing precinct.
Records showed that the vehicle linked to that fleet card was in for repairs at the SAPS garage at the time, yet a transaction of R1,300.00 was made on that day.
The investigations also revealed that the member allegedly used a third fleet card at the same filling station for R700.00 on a day when the motor vehicle was parked and not in use.
It is alleged that the member stole the fleet cards from the office and took them to the filling station. Upon arrival, he allegedly colluded with three petrol attendants who filled petrol into customers’ private vehicles in exchange for cash.
After the cash transaction, the member would swipe the state fleet card and allegedly share the money with the petrol attendants.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, the docket was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions who authorized charges of fraud and theft against the member.
The 54-year-old Sergeant was charged and served with summons to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Major-General Jan Scheepers, said: “Corruption within the ranks will not be tolerated. We commend the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for their thorough investigation that led to the arrest of this member. We remain committed to rooting out any form of misconduct and ensuring that public resources are protected.”
