Ahmed Banberker, chief executive for strategic business development at Sanlam, said Sanlam became aware of the company only last week and immediately posted a scam alert on its website. “It is not linked to Sanlam in any way,” he told Business on Friday.
Sanlam said its loan offer was managed through Sanlam Personal Loans (Pty) Ltd.
Describing the business as a “false entity” Sanlam said it uses a fake logo and contact details, presenting clients with a guaranteed loan offering of 4.5% return in the forms of personal, commercial, leasing, debt consolidation and home loans. The campaign appears to be soliciting confidential information from people with the enticement of a loan, Banberker said.
Business called Erna Wetzel, the marketing manager of the false entity Sanlam Loans SA Pty, who invited us to the business’s office in Joubert Street in the Johannesburg CBD. She said the business was registered with the Financial Services Board and had an FSP number. However, she could not provide us with the number when asked, requesting that we email her queries.
When asked why the SAPS was investigating whether the business was legitimate, she hung up.
