CONYERS — Rockdale Water Resources has issued an alert to customers regarding fraudulent phone activity from unauthorized individuals calling to ask for immediate credit card payments on past due accounts in order to avoid disconnection.
According to a press release from RWR, the system’s normal business practices do not allow for a customer service representative to call an active customer to make an immediate credit card payment on an account to avoid disconnection. Normal protocol for alerting past due customers of possible disconnection is by sending them a disconnection notice. Notices are mailed out monthly.
RWR said the issue is being addressed quickly and RWR regularly makes every effort to ensure customers’ information is protected. This is the first time this type of fraud has been an issue for RWR.
Customers who receive a call from an unauthorized caller should follow these guidelines:
-
Get as much information as possible from the unauthorized caller. Write it down.
-
Hang up and then immediately call RWR at 770-278-7400 to report the incident. You can also send an email to watercustomerservice@rockdalecounty.org.
-
If you receive a fraudulent call, please consider changing all passwords to any account where a password is used for activation as a precautionary measure.
