BENGALURU: Theatre and movie personality Prakash Belawadi was allegedly cheated of Rs 90,000 when his wife inadvertently shared the one time password (OTP) he had received on his mobile phone with a suspected phisher.
According to Belawadi, he was having problems in updating his KYC details with his MNC bank. On Friday afternoon, Belawadi was at his home when he heard his wife talking to someone on the phone.
“She was complaining that she hadn’t got the SMS. I was writing something and asked her to speak softly. She moved to another room, still on the phone. She was also saying something about KYC. Suddenly, my phone beeped and another OTP message came. I read out the numbers. She instantly repeated it on the phone,” Belawadi said.
Belawadi immediately realized something was amiss and took the phone from his wife. “She announced to the other guy, ‘My husband wants to talk to you.’ I took her mobile from her and said hello but he had already disconnected. I told my wife that it was a fraud. She said, ‘No, it’s the bank person’.”
The theatre personality later received a transaction confirmation message on his credit card that read: “Rs 90,000 was used on your credit card, thank you for banking with us.”
Belawadi said he thought his wife was doing a transaction on his card, while she thought the caller was some bank official verifying KYC details.
A complaint has been registered by Belawadi’s wife with Jayanagar police station.
