HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Police are warning Pennsylvanians of a fraudulent email that claims to be a fine for traffic violations from PennDOT.
The email that has been sent to people across the state claims a vehicle registered to the recipient was captured running a red light, and it provides links to supposedly view photos and pay the fine. The links redirect the recipient to websites not affiliated with PennDOT, police said.
Police said the email is a “phishing” scam; an attempt to get personal information by posing as a legitimate business or organization.
For the record, traffic tickets issued in Pennsylvania are not paid directly to PennDOT. Another sign of a scam, police said, is the poor spelling and grammatical errors within the message.
Authorities said people who receive such emails should not reply or click on the links, but delete it immediately.
