OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — The Osage Beach Police Department is reporting a new scam has emerged in recent days, and it has targeted members of Mid Missouri Credit Union.
The department says more than 100 members have contacted the credit union to report a phone call they received in which the caller claims to be from MMCU and says the member’s debit card has been compromised and needs to be reauthorized. The scammer then asks the member to dial his or her PIN, to reauthorize the card. The scam has reportedly affected some non-credit-union members as well.
MMCU never calls its members about their debit cards for any reason, the department emphasized. Anyone with a question about his or her debit card should call the bank card holder services directly.
The department noted phishing also can occur through email and websites, asking a person to click a link or download something from a site. Threats such as “your account will be permanently blocked” can also be an indicator of a phishing email, and the scams often operate under the pretense of being a large or well-known organization.
