The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested two more people in connection with the money siphoning case in which actor Raveena Tandon’s husband Anil Thadani was a victim. Investigations have revealed that Thadani’s cheque passed through both the arrested accused before ending up with main accused Muzammil Tazdar, further indicating a widespread and highly organised racket.
Thadani complained to the Crime Branch that Rs 12.5 lakh had been transferred by cheque payment from his account, when he had not issued any such cheque.A probe led to the arrest of Muzammil Tazdar and Salim Syed, who were believed to be involved in a widespread phishing scam spanning Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, with Thadani’s cheque being the only exception to the modus operandi. The discovery of 15 more cheques in Syed’s residence had led the Crime Branch to rethink their initial assumption and a separate and highly effective module is now believed to be working only to obtain cheques from individuals and siphon money from their accounts.
Over the past 24 hours, the Crime Branch arrested Kishore Kanaujia and Shabab Khan from their residences in Malad and Nallasopara respectively, after Syed revealed their names during interrogation.
“Thadani’s chequebook, which went missing from his office, was passed on from Kanaujia to Khan to Tazdar, who deposited it in the bank and transferred it to an account that he had opened in the name of Sumit Gupta. We have the name of the person who gave the chequebook to Kanaujia and even he is not the last person in the chain,” said an officer.
The officer added that Kanaujia and Khan were promised one per cent share of the money obtained using the cheque, while Tazdar, who would incur the maximum risk by depositing the cheque and withdrawing the money, would get 45 per cent. He withdrew Rs 50,000 the same day and was going to withdraw more but the account was blocked after Thadani got to know about the transfer of money.
