What is “phishing”?
The “Handbook of Information and Communication Security” by Peter Stavroulakis and Mark Stamp says that phishing “stems from a malicious email that victims receive effectively causing them to visit a fraudulent website at which they are tricked into divulging personal information.”

A phishing email was sent to multiple students from the University of Hawai?i at M?noa Student Housing Services (SHS) account at 4:42 a.m.
The email’s subject line read “Very Urgent” and prompted recipients to follow a hyperlink and sign in with their Google account to view “urgent documents.”
At 9:26 A.M., SHS followed up with another email to identify the message was indeed a phishing attempt. The warning claimed “hawaii.edu” addresses were being targeted.
According to SHS, another email with the subject “AOL – Violated Terms and Conditions” was also sent out. These suspicious messages were both reported to Information Technology Services, who will be sending out a system-wide email to warn about the phishing.
“We want all of the members of our UH Ohana to be aware and vigilant and remind everyone not to click on any links in a suspicious email,” Meisenzahl said. “If you have and provided your email log-in and password, change your password immediately.”
The John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Office of Information Technology has been warned of a “slew of new phishing emails going around with a subject labeled ‘Very Urgent Document'” since Jan. 29, according to an email sent to members of the med school community.
