An alert has been issued to property owners after a recent attempt by a Nigerian scammer to sell an Edgewater property.
Earlier this month, an overseas organised criminal network began the process of selling the Perth property, owned by a couple living in South Africa.
North Beach real estate agency Peard and Associates was contacted via email by the fraudsters, requesting a document related to the property, using an email address in the real owner’s name.
The criminals also contacted the agency via phone on several occasions, requesting the property be sold.
The agency followed suggested guidelines related to combating identity fraud, sending a confirmation letter to the original address on file for the Edgewater property.
It was then that the real owners were alerted to the bogus sale, contacting the real estate agency.
The owners confirmed that a property condition report sent to them from the agency had not been received, and it is believed this was intercepted by the criminals.
The scam attempt has prompted a warning from Consumer Protection and WA Police, who are continuing to investigate the origins of the scammer.
“In the past two years, major fraud squad detectives have presented numerous fraud awareness presentations to the WA property industry to provide useful background to these types of crimes,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Davies.
“The sessions also educate agents about how to detect and prevent these fraud attempts from being successful.
“Our presentations and the new identity verification guidelines have successfully stopped several recent attempts to illegally sell WA homes.”
Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said this recent attempt is further reason for all real estate and settlement agents in WA to be meticulous in following the new procedures aimed at preventing real estate fraud.
This follows three similar attempts by an international scammer to sell Perth properties without the owner’s consent earlier this year.
In June 2010, Perth man Roger Mildenhall fell victim to a similar scam, with his Karrinyup home sold without his knowledge.
The scammers then tried to sell another of his properties in Wembley, but the plan was foiled by a neighbour alerting him to the attempted sale.
