Students at New River Community College were the recipients of a bogus email sent out Wednesday in an attempt to get them to reveal their login information.
The email’s subject read “Your Microsoft Exchange E-mail Has Exceeded Limit,” and asked the students to click a link to verify their login information. The fake email threatened to terminate their student accounts if they didn’t verify their information.
The scamming email, sent from a seemingly legitimate address belonging to a member of NRCC’s staff, was sent at 3:48 a.m. Wednesday morning. The school sent out a warning email later that day at 11:16 a.m.
Information Technology Director Timothy Jones warned students of the phishing scam to seize their login credentials in the body of the email. He also urged any student that followed the link and supplied their credentials to change their email password immediately.
At this point, it is unknown how many students were impacted by the phishing scam, or if the issue has been completely resolved.
