The Better Business Bureau office of Monroe is warning people of a phishing scam that uses the BBB’s name to lure people to click on a link that infects their computers with a virus.
The BBB says any email purporting to be from the BBB regarding a complaint and containing an attachment is fraudulent and should be ignored and deleted. Anyone who has clicked on a link contained in such an email should run a full virus scan on his or her computer, according to a news release from the BBB.
Some examples of the emails that people have been receiving:
“Valued business owner, we have received several complaints via the Better
Business Bureau online complaint center concerning several unauthorized transaction
from a number of checking bank accounts to your corporate account. You can view
the complaints in our online complaint center using the following link:
http:/track.lawnserviceglendaleaz.com/main.php?page=79517303f67f5c
(link removed)” ; and “Dear business owner, we have obtained several reports via the Better Business Bureau online complaint center concerning several unauthorized transaction from a number of checking bank accounts to your corporate account. You can access the complaints in our online complaint center using the following link:
The BBB Complaint Center (link removed).”
The BBB says only emails that contain the link: “www.westernmichigan.bbb.org” are legitimately from the bureau. The BBB has been working with the FBI and Secret Service to shut down the websites that host malware fraudlently using the Bureaus’ name.
“These efforts are ongoing. Though we have no control over these emails, we apologize for any inconvenience,” according to the BBB.
