The number of attacks made to smartphones has risen massively this month, a new report claims.
According to research from Cloudmark, the number of people being hit by SMS phishing attacks during the first week of September rose by a whopping 913 per cent.
In blog post published by Mary Landesman, senior security researcher at Cloudmark, the rise in attacks appears to have been caused by a single set of attacks which started on September 4th.
The phishing centred around a scheme which asked smartphone users to contact telephone numbers based in cities across the United States.
Cloudmark claims the attackers were phishing for the sensitive data many people have stored on their handsets and those who fell for the scam put themselves at risk of bank and credit card fraud as well as identity theft.
“Never divulge sensitive information to any source you have not fully vetted,” Ms Landesman said.
“When in doubt contact your bank, credit card company, or health provider by known good numbers you have on file.”
