KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Employees and students are being warned after Kalamazoo College was hit by a “spear phishing” scam.
According to Kalamazoo College, a college employee received an email on Thursday requesting employees’ 2015 W2 forms. The email appeared to be from a college administrator.
Believing the email was real, the employee sent faculty, staff and student employees’ 2015 W2s to the scammer(s).
Kalamazoo assistant director of communication Jeff Palmer with told 24 Hour News 8 on Friday that people impacted are those who held jobs on campus in 2015. The exact number is unknown.
At this time, authorities don’t know who is behind the phishing scheme.
The college has notified the Michigan State Police, the FBI and the IRS of the incident. IRS will monitor affected employees’ returns to prevent fraudulent tax refunds from being paid out, according to Kalamazoo College.
Employees are encouraged to contact TransUnion, a credit reporting agency, as soon as possible at 1.800.680.7289 or online to start a 90-day fraud alert.
In addition, the college will monitor credit scores for those who may be affected by the scam.
