HOBART | Hobart police are warning residents to beware of a scam involving an email alert followed by a check sent in the mail.
The targeted individual is asked to cash the check, keeping a portion and sending the remainder to a specific address, Hobart police Detective Jeremy Ogden said.
The most recent case was reported Tuesday by a Hobart resident who received a $1,500 check in the mail.
“He was asked to go to his bank and cash the check, then keep 10 percent for himself and send the rest to an address in Florida,” Ogden said.
The resident, who reported the fraud to police, would have been out the $1,500 if he would have cashed it, Ogden said.
Residents who receive any type of check in the mail they’re not expecting should make a report to police.
“If money magically appears on your doorstep, call the police,” Ogden said.
