GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Hundreds of Mainers report getting a phishing phone call asking for their Gorham Savings Bank debit card number and pin.
The calls started just before 8 Thursday morning. Gorham Savings Bank says it got hundreds of calls from customers and non-customers saying they had gotten automated messages, claiming to be from the bank, saying their cards were locked and to press 1 to reactivate them. People who pressed 1 were asked to give their debit card number and pin.
The bank worked with police to get the word out right away that this was a scam. Gorham Savings had an alert on their website as well as on social media, and Cumberland County Dispatch sent out reverse 911 calls in the towns where the call came in.
So far, the bank reports no one’s account has been compromised.
Eric Andrews, the Chief Risk Officer for Gorham Savings Bank, said, “If you are in doubt at all, contact the bank at a trusted number you know. A bank would never ask you for your user name and password information like that. Absolutely, trust your gut instinct.”
You also should call your local law enforcement. These calls are notoriously difficult to track down, but the more information police have the better.
