GAUTENG – The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime unit has arrested former City of Johannesburg Municipal Councillor, Daniel Bovu (45) and his accomplice Isaac Mhlongo (47) for alleged fraud and theft on Wednesday, 17 January 2018.
It is alleged that in 2006, both accused were trustees for Thembelihle Development Trust Fund (TDTF) whilst Bovu was still working as MMC for Housing. The pair allegedly conspired and sold stands to the public in Legae, Vlakfontein and Sweet Waters for amounts varying from R5000 per stand.
In one of those illegal transactions, two complainants were allegedly sold the same stand number and they were allegedly made to pay additional amounts on top of what they’d already paid. The two complainants eventually met and realised that they have been scammed which resulted in a case being opened.
The case was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Unit in October 2015 for further investigation. The suspects appeared before the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, January 17 facing charges of fraud and theft, they have been granted bail of R5000 each. The case is postponed to 02 February 2018.
