STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Federal officials in Detroit on Monday announced a “historic interagency effort” to eliminate fraud in the trucking industry.
In addition to the creation of a new joint federal task force to support the crack down, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy announced an immediate, emergency shutdown of 110 commercial driver’s license (CDL) schools associated with over 5,000 drivers who the administration says failed English language proficiency tests. The agency will also perform a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers and states’ oversight of the testers, officials said.
At a press conference on Monday, Duffy described the effort as an aggressive action to safeguard American roads against unqualified and unvetted illegal truckers, noting the importance of support from federal law enforcement operations.
