If you get an email utility bill for $500, $524 or $524.30, delete it and don’t open the link.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection issued a consumer alert Tuesday about the scam.
The emails, which appear to be coming from overseas, are for utility services from “Energy Billing Service or “Energy Billing System.”
“The email messages include a link to ‘view your most recent bill,'” the consumer alert said. “Clicking that link could download a malware package, or could direct you to a scam website where you are prompted to turn over personal or banking information.”
DATCP has received complaints from consumers about the scam, and utility company WE Energies told DATCP more than 50 customers have called its call center, saying they’ve gotten fake emails as well.
“As with any other unsolicited email or text message from an unknown source, simply delete it and take no further action,” the consumer alert said.
For more information or to file a complaint, go online, send an email to datcphotline@wisconsin.gov, or call the consumer information hotline, 800-422-7128.
