ROANOKE, VA –
A warning for veterans and their families in southwest Virginia.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is issuing a fraud alert focusing on the VA National call center or the GI Bill call center.
A marketing firm bought phone numbers that are one number off.
The VA says the firm is trying to get personal information from veterans who misdial.
According to the Better Business Bureau the best way to protect yourself is to be aware of who you’re speaking with.
“If you call the doctor to ask a question, they typically confirm your birth date, your address. they don’t usually ask you for your social security number, they don’t ask you for your bank account number. what makes sense that they would be asking you,” said Julie Wheeler with the BBB.
If you are unsure of a phone number or agency you’re talking to contact the BBB.
