SCAMMERS have been sending out fake e-mails offering phony council tax rebates.
Erewash Borough Council has sent out a warning to all residents to be wary of becoming a victim of this fraud.
The e-mail tells recipients they are eligible for a refund of £274.39.
It then requests them to complete a tax form, detailing confidential bank information.
The e-mails claim to come from REFUND@direct.gov.uk.
Leader of Erewash Borough Council Chris Corbett said the council would never send an unsolicited request for information.
He said: “We remind residents that they should never, in any circumstances, give out personal or banking details by email or to anyone making an unsolicited call or visit to their home.”
The council has contacted Trading Standards and the National Anti Fraud Network.
