MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A record number of absentee ballots will play a huge role in Tuesday’s Municipal Elections, elections especially if it ends up being a tight race as predicted. At noon Tuesday, the ballots were certified and counted at Government Plaza.
At the same time the Sandy Stimpson campaign issued a “fraud alert” after a number of voters complained to the campaign that the voter roles showed them as voting absentee. The alert from the Stimpson campaign was sent out via email. The campaign tells Local 15 News they had enough calls to merit sending out the alerts.
We spoke to one of those voters who voted earlier today at E.R. Dickson school.
“I just went to vote and they said, ‘oh you’ve already voted absentee.’ And I said no I have not, so they said go see these men over here and I did and they said well you will have to vote a provisional ballot,” said Dabney Foshee of Mobile.
“We do know of one instance where the son voted and the father has the same name as the son and so we corrected that and he was able to vote a regular ballot,” said Mobile City Clerk Lisa Lambert.
Provisional ballots are counted after the election and Tuesday officials certified all the absentee ballots more than 3,500.
Absentee ballots were later scanned with a high speed scanner. The ballots will be added to the total when the polls close at 7p.m..
In both those cases mentioned in this report the voter was eventually allowed to vote with a regular ballot after officials verified they had indeed not voted absentee.Controversy Over Absentee Ballots
