SACRAMENTO — California’s Secretary of State’s Office said the state’s voter-registration safeguards comply with federal law as the Trump administration expands its focus onpossible noncitizen voting.
Previous reports said hundreds of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services fraud-detection officers were reassigned to compare voter data with federal immigration information and look for possible noncitizens who registered or voted illegally.
The Department of Homeland Security said it was working with states to obtain voter records and cross-check them with USCIS information. The administration has claimed about 278,000 noncitizens may be improperly registered nationwide, including 250,000 across California, Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The reports did not establish whether any people identified had voted or explain the method used to reach the figures.
