FREE STATE – Two suspects, aged 28 and 61, are expected to appear before the Botshabelo Magistrates’ Court on charges of fraud and corruption. They were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Bloemfontein on Sunday, 05 May 2024.
On Saturday, 04 May 2024, the Hawks received information about corrupt activities taking place in Botshabelo where a male person, pretending to be an employee of Centlec, a Free State electricity supplying company, promised the complainant a job at Centlec if he pays him an amount of R6000. The complainant complied and paid an amount of R3000 at first, then later paid another R1500. The suspect started to demand an outstanding amount of R1500 from the complainant who had by then discovered that the suspect was not employed by Centlec. He decided to report the matter to the Hawks.
Upon receiving the information, an operation was conducted which led to the suspect being apprehended. Investigation led to an accomplice who was working with him.
Both suspects will appear before the Botshabelo Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 06 May 2024.
