Middle Tennessee businesses and residents are being warned about an e-mail phishing scam targeting ATT Wireless customers.
The emails, purportedly from an “ATT Customer Care” address, tell recipients that their wireless bill is ready for viewing and encourages them to click on links to view it, pay it online and download a smartphone app to manage the account, the Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee said.
Instead, the links lead to a third-party website that downloads a virus on the recipient’s computer. The malware then can be used by criminals to transfer money out of bank accounts or obtain personal information.
Those who clicked a link on one of these emails should delete the email and eliminate it from the trash folder, and run a complete system scan.
