Suspects in court for fraudulent drivers’ licenses

Nine suspects linked to fraudulent drivers licenses issued in Carnarvon in the Northern Cape have appeared before the Carnarvon Magistrate Court today.

They have been granted bail for R3 000 each and the case has been postponed to 17 April.

The suspects are facing charges of fraud and corruption.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit arrested the suspects aged between 26 and 46 in various places in the Western Cape on Monday and Tuesday.

They allegedly obtained drivers licences without being subjected to mandatory tests.

Hawks Serious Corruption Unit, uncovered these fraudulent licences after following up allegations of fraud and corruption about the traffic examiner at Carnarvon Traffic Department who solicited bribes varying from R1 500 to R3 500 in exchange for the fraudulent licenses in 2016.

During the arrests, eight drivers’ licenses were seized. –
