Parents targeted in school email scam

Fraud Alert:

At least six parents with children at St Kevin’s College in Toorak have received emails claiming to be from the all-boys Catholic school and asking them to donate money into a bank account, reports The Herald Sun.

The alarm was raised when suspicious parents noticed the email’s sent address differed slightly from the school’s correct email address.

Police are investigating the scam and the school has written to families warning them to be on the lookout. “Scam emails are a form of fraud far too common of late,” St Kevin’s headmaster Stephen Russell wrote in an email to parents.

“Please be alert to anyone claiming to be from St Kevin’s College who asks for personal details. We will always happily accept a call to validate any school contact.”

A spokeswoman from St Kevin’s confirmed the school had been targeted by online fraudsters but declined to comment further on the matter.

A police spokeswoman said they were not aware of anyone falling victim to the fraud attempt. “The emails included a request for money to be put into an account, however no one who received the email complied,” the spokeswoman said.

“Police remind people to be aware of providing personal details, including information about bank accounts, to unknown third parties online and seek further verification of a sender where possible.”
