The Hawks are finalising investigations into alleged fraud in the construction and leasing of the Northern Cape offices of Transport.
The department is currently renting the building from Ocean Echo Properties. The Hawks are investigating possibly fraudulent transactions.
The new building has been leased since 2011. Ocean Echo Properties purchased it with a R15-million loan.
That loan was secured on a departmental appointment letter.
They now rent the building to the Transport Department for R330 000 per month.
The Hawks’ Philani Nkwalase says: “The enquiry was opened by us in January 2014, as the incident dates back. At this stage we had to take the first step of the investigation which was conducted, and now we are ready to go to the next step. We are ready for the finalisation process.”
