VILLUPURAM: A 50-year-old farmer from Nadukuppam village near Marakkanam has lost Rs 16,259 from his savings bank account with a nationalised bank after falling prey to a phishing attack by an anonymous caller. Ealumalai got a call from a person who introduced himself as an assistant manager at the bank on Tuesday evening. The caller requested him to disclose his 11-digit account number, 16-digit ATM card number, last three digits of its cvv number and his ATM PIN in order to renew his card. Ealumalai obliged and gave him the details. As he didn’t receive any such message, he narrated the incident to a neighbourhood youth, who advised him to change his ATM PIN. Around 7 pm when Ealumalai went to an ATM to change his PIN, he found his account had been debited Rs 16,259 out of the Rs 17,600 balance he had. Ealumalai then lodged a complaint at the Marakkanam police station.
